I’m Deb Evans.  I am a thirty-something mother and graphic artist.    I live in the beautiful wine region of the Oregon Coast and enjoy rolling green hills, vineyards, orchards and lush landscape…all on the way to the grocery store.  I have the good fortune of running my own online vector art business and working from home.  Though I was divorced about seven years ago, I have two delightful boys ages ten and eleven who fill my life with fun, laughter and a seemingly never ending array of activities.  On any given night of the week we have soccer, baseball, boy scouts and piano lessons. We have sports games on Saturdays and church on Sundays.  Like most people these days, it is not unusual for my whole week to be filled right to the brim before I’ve even had a say in what goes in it.

This past summer I left my online business in the very capable hands of my business partner (and sister) Michelle, and I put on an actual art exhibit in Shelley, Idaho. While there, I found myself at the home of my friend Mary Smith talking with another friend, Marlene, who had driven her Winnebago to the party.  She took me out and showed me her rig, told me of her adventures and planted a little seed in the back of my mind.

The first two weeks of our art show, I made the 30 minute trip to another sister’s house several times to use her internet and check in on business as usual.  About the start of the third week, I had read every book I’d brought with me, written out every scheme and dream I could think up, and generally had more time on my hands than I could remember… and, for the first time in 20 years, felt…bored.  The boredom sent me right out the door to Best Buy to purchase a laptop and wireless card.  Ahhh, I had internet again.  And with it, something I had never experienced before….I was mobile.

Upon returning to Newberg,  a fall full of soccer, scouts, and piano lessons found me wondering how life gets so busy.  With my new found internet mobility, I resurrected Marlene’s idea to “…just get a van and travel together…you will never regret the time you spend with your boys at this age…it goes so fast.”  The idea to travel in a little van turned into a bigger van…then a camper, and within six weeks, I had packed our belongings and put them in storage, bought a truck and a camper and prepared to step out of life for the following six months.

My boys took to the idea immediately.  I usually have a pretty good ability to think big, but as my children entered the equation, they came up with the idea to reach all 48 states over the next six months.  So off we go…with no prior RVing experience to see the magnificent United States of America, be reminded of the beauties of nature, and most importantly, to spend six months hiking, laughing, talking, dreaming, scheming, and being…together.
